Crating for Overseas shipment
by: Wendy Thompson
I just thought that some modellers
may be interested in how to cradle one of these models for transit
overseas. All went well and no damage to my ship.
The HMS Victory is in my modelling
room, she is waiting for the foam to cure around the hull which
is covered with plastic wrap in half so that it comes apart in two.
The foam was only used in the center as we used block foam for the
base which was 100mm high. A box surrounded the rudder so it did
not come into contact with anything, there are 3 holes in the foam,
one for the name plate and the other two for the corronades, which
were to be put on later.
This is her in the new pexiglass
cover and base, the cover was wrapped in plastic to prevent the
rubbing of the sheet polystyrine that we used in between that and
the outer case. Velcro straps were inbedded in the spray foam and
used to secure the hull, ships boats and oars.
This is the outer case made
from sheets of ply wood, heaps of self tapping screws and windows
for the customs people who like to have a nosy. I had placed photos
on all sides just to let everyone know what they were transporting.
TNT did cover the crate even more with nice bright fluro coloured
stickers
to add to her safety.

She's all ready to go, we even
put strong handles on her for easy lifting, she weighed in at 55
kg, which is aprox 115 lb. Next step.......pray !! She was insured
too..just in case. Did I cry ? Yep !, I sure did !!! Wendy.
